Climate Science for Beginners

The climate crisis was so unexpected! We had been doing very well, building an excellent world for ourselves. Now it seems the thing that made our modern marvels possible, ‘black gold’, has a dark side. We must act swiftly. We’ve done it before; we can do it again. The activities here will fill you in on what we know so far, and help you to find ways to cope

CHANGE BLINDNESS

CO2 levels crept up on us so slowly we didn’t notice. This magic demonstration of change blindness shows how gradual change can fox us.

WHAT’S THE PROBLEM WITH CO2 ?

CO2 is a party animal. It likes to dance. If the rhythm is right – and the Earth’s rhythm is just right – then the Earth gets the CO2 going, and the CO2 gets the whole atmosphere dancing along with it. And movement is heat, so the air gets warmer.

WHAT IS THE EVIDENCE?

It’s hard to separate the signal of the climate from the noise of the weather. But we did it, by collecting data from everywhere and crunching the numbers carefully. Here we show the results, simply.

WHY ARE SCIENTISTS SO HOPELESS AT TELLING US?

They use language in a way nobody understands. Words like ‘positive’, ‘confident’, ‘theory’, ‘very likely’, ‘uncertainty’, can be used against them by climate change deniers.

TIPPING POINT

‘Jungle Jenga’ is a beautifully adapted game of Jenga that shows what happens to an ecosystem when one creature at a time is removed. No single animal’s loss causes a sudden collapse: they all do together.

GOOD TIPPING POINT

No single person causes a rescue: We all do together. Our useful tipping point will come when everyone realizes that, together, we can make the necessary changes  We are a social species: we are famously good at working together on things.

WE’VE BEEN HERE BEFORE

We have already ‘tipped’ in a very clever way: COVID! The world all acted together. We – the globe – sorted a vaccine out in a year. 18 of them, actually. We, the globe, distributed them. Globally.

HOW TO SAVE ENERGY

We’ll use Postit notes to create a display of ways to go forward, with ideas from everyone, from young pioneers to aged survivors.
